Any thread left on the bobbins at the end of a project: I throw away any
thread that's less than about 15 inches. Those longer than that I wind the
bobbin on to an empty thread spool (I always keep the spools from sewing
thread whem they're empty), tie the next length to the first and so on
The only thing I have with a hook like that is a pair of stainless scissors
that I acquired when the hospital I was working at was disposing of sample
tools - they were bowel and post mortem scissors! How they were used, I
can only imagine (or rather I'd prefer not to imagine.) The hadn't been
I recently lent my copy of this wonderful little
book to Tess to scan for
the CD's. I don't know if it made the last scan or
not.
Tess scanned it before she left for the holidays.

This book has indeed been put on the web site, thanks to Lori's generosity in
lending it to me for scanning. (You can't imagine how many of the old books we
have made available to us by generous lacemakers willing to lend me their books
to scan.) It has been posted on the This Month's section
This must be the book I have, except I have no translation. The
stitch by number method is difficult to follow, but I plan to pick a
pattern, and see if I can puzzle it out.
A little bonus in my copy of the book is an advertisement for the
Princess Lace Pillow from April 1905 Modern Priscilla.
Since posting this morning, I've found several web sites with instructions
for these dolls. Slight variations, but all basically the same thing. The
main difference between these and the ones I make is that I cut the tops of
the loops of mine for hair and make the hanging thread from the thread

When my mother was alive, we used to make these dolls in white acrylic wool
over a framework of a pipe cleaner, then dress them with a crocheted skirt,
shawl and brimmed hat, stiffened with starch. We would stuff the skirt with
polyfill, sometimes mixed with some dried lavender, and stitch a

We made those too, when I was a child in Poland; they looked a bit like
the ones on the Rumanian website (thanks, Jean, for posting those) --
we didn't dress them ans, usually, they didn't have any hair, either.
But I remember having a pair attached to the string which held my
mittens together

Oh my goodness!
Until I went to some of these websites, I had no recollection at all of
these dolls, but sure enough... I made them too, as a child!!
I remember that the head of the doll was shaped over a styrofoam ball
which was about an inch in diameter. It did end up as a cute little
Hi All, I must be fast but I had to write since Thread Dolls appeared! I
got one for the Holiday Exchange!! Lynn in WV is learning to tat (and doing
beautifully!) and she sent an angel. The angel body and head is a tassel
and then she has a tatted halo and tatted wings! She's quite charming!!
Not one of my best-organized years for holiday preparations--still, it's not
quite Christmas yet (at least in North America) and I *am* getting out my
holiday e-mails! As usual, the card (and a longer letter) is online at my
personal website:

Dear Friends,
Yesterday I went to a fabulous 60th birthday party at the Oakdene
Winery at Wallington near Geelong and had THE most gorgeous entree
which is so easy to make. Of course the serving was way too small,
but the one I made at home later certainly wasn't :)
