A friend who has now given up lacemaking has given me a couple of prickings
for handkerchief edgings. Can anyone who makes edgings for hankies tell me
what they do about getting the right size of linen material to fit the
prickings. Do you buy them ready made and if so who supplies them, or do

I am curious about the 'sitting in the sun' to make lace. It is something I

Thank you for thinking of me. The village where I live is quite high up, so no
problems with the flooding but many of the surrounding areas have been quite
badly flooded especially Castleford. My daughter and her family live in
Pickering which was badly flooded but fortunately not

I have been reading about pillow felt with interest. I have an old domed foam
pillow and the top bit is more or less on the point of collapse. Would a layer
of felt under the cover save its life as I can't imagine it been firm enough

Miriam I use a tiny bit of tacky wax to hold my lace in position. You really
only do need the minutest bit and it cannot be seen when the lace is in
position. It has the advantage of being easily removable too without pulling
the threads of the lace.

Bone bobbins are my favourite and I have managed to collect quite a few over
the years and in all that time I have only ever broken one as a result of
dropping it on my tiled kitchen floor. I have had wooden bobbins snap off at
the neck too. My advise would be to collect the type of bobbin that
I don't do much tape lace so it's probably down to my inexperience but can
anyone tell me why when I place the pin at the right hand side of the work I
get a nicely formed loop but when I work the left hand side the loop is much
smaller and not so well formed. I angle my pins and tension the
I seem to remember some time ago someone describing how to make a bobbin
winder using string. I remember thinking it was a good idea and intended to
remember the details but my rememberer forgot to remember so if anyone knows
what I am talking about or has a good idea for a Heath Robinson

I'm not sure exactly when I joined Arachne. It would be around 2005/6 I
think. As a self taught lacemaker who has had only an occassional access to
a tutor the members of this group have been invaluable for their help. The

Can someone please advise me as to how to finish the end of my horseshoe so
it matches the start i.e. with a straight edge and no pinholes. I just want

I am on digest so sometimes have to wait awhile for messages so I refer back to
the Arachne web page. I know the subject of missing mails has come up quite
recently but I thought this mainly applied to individual emails and I presumed
that if they were on the digest they would be on the web
What do you all do with the threads that have been joined. I have just finished
a large piece with a great deal of ground stitches and really there is nowhere
to weave in the ends without spoiling the look of the lace. I have tied and cut
threads before but can't say that I have been satisfied

I have just spent two hours going through the photos and videos of the
convention on IOLI Facebook.
The photography is marvellous and very clear. The videos are brilliant. I was
singing along with the Mummers. At the end I felt as if I had really got the
atmosphere of it all.

I live in Yorkshire and the earth most definitely moved on Tuesday night. We
