This is a nice idea, but not for lcms but for ICC. There is no
reliable way for a CMM to guess the real range on profiles using
floating point extensions. But ICC spec may add a new tag, and maybe
this would makes sense. Next ICC meeting in on March 2, and I will

With current ICC architecture, it is up to the profile to do the color
mapping, so transicc will do exactly what you want if you provide the
right profiles. For example, V2 sRGB does not do any gamut mapping,
