Paul, have you looked at the Wine AppDB list? Someone has
successfully installed Legacy 7 using Wine 1.0-rc4 on openSUSE 10.3
(see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=applicationiId=3207).
They might have some insight for you.
Also on that list it appears that Legacy 5 works well

avail. I, too, saw where they got Legacy 5 working but not 6 and I
didn't see any comment about version 7. But, I won't give up that
