I want to put the inforamtion in CULLODEN ONS, a Legacy family history file
in a place where I can search the birth years, and then search again in that
search for the place and then the father.
Actually that can all be done in the one search once the inforamtion is in
the new place - Access, MS
Keith,
That is, as I said, how I do it and. yes, it does lead to a very large number
of Residence Events. But this does not cause problems - after all that is what
databases are for!

I've been following this thread and, us i'm very used to EXCEL and ACCESS, I
think I can say something usefull.

2º - If you are not very knowledge of Databases, Access and SQL don´t try it.

There are some things you could change via the 4 Geocodes.txt

instructions, but I have never read them.
In your existing file you could change all the Germany to Deutschland
via Search and Replace.

I have at least 15 residences for a grandfather in less than 10 years.
His first four children were all born in different towns, and the rest

I've read the text in the GeoCountryCodes.txt file and think you have
to look for the entry for Germany and add a + (plus sign) before
Bundesrepublik Deutschland (or change this first to just Deutschland.
The plus sign is default before Germany in the file.

Yes, that is exactly what I need to know - I have the addresses, but I don't
want to click through each branch. I simply want to go to the beginning (in
the program) ancestor and be able to find the addresses for all the living
descendants for whom I have entered addresses. I do not know how to
Thanks Cathy for the insight - I went back and removed teh numbers in my Master

Master Source File ID number, and a Detail File ID (if both are applicable) to
the end note data, so I can refer to researchb data I may have
JL - Some weeks ago, one of the correspondents referenced a filing system at

using the MRIN + a number for a specific item.
A follow-on correspondent also discussed numbering the Master Source documents

Cynthia,
I have only half been following this thread but if you have found the ancestors

Well, Legacy is just so brilliant in this regard - nothing but tricks up
its sleeve. If you look to the right of the Master Source File ID box,
(on the big screen for entering Master Sources) there's a set of
binoculars. Click on that, and Tick the box that says Include Master
Source File
Have you tried looking at your data with genviewer?
Once loaded, it can read your legacy file directly or a gedcom, select
list mode, indicate what columns you want, click on top of columns to
sort by that option.
It has a nice scripting language as well to highlight selected items.
It can

I don't know about Access, but I'm pretty sure that with Open Office one would

to check the tables first though to be certain.

That will only give you the option to sort by one item at a time. One of her
messages seemed to indicate she wanted to sort by one criteria, then take a
sub-group from that list and sort by another criteria, then do the same

I think some-one has already written some time ago with a different way
of doing it but just in case not, here's my version of it. Judging by
the other person's answer this is really the long way to do it.
However, it might familiarize you with searches as a useful sideline.
1. Go to the
Your right in GENViewer u can only sort via one column at a time.
But Genviewer allows you to easily export to a comma, delimited text
file which you can then do sorts on multiple levels with OpenOffice
Excel equivalent.
You don't have to create SQL Querys on multiple tables in the Database
Yes, I was thinking if she would state exactly what she was trying to
accomplish it may be possible to get there from *within* Legacy. My point
was that GenViewer was not likely to be satisfactory.

I do not see the Miscellaneous Searches tab. Help please, Cynthia
I have no problem with suggesting GenViewer as an intermediary to transfer
the data into something else, I was only responding top the first half of
your comment. But she still hasn't stated what she wants to accomplish, so
we don't know whether going through those hoops is really needed.
Yeah, I know what that feels like, can't get to Step 2. Enough about me.
Forget about the list. Do you have a Magnifier tool on your toolbar

It's OK, Jan. I've been watching the thread of Census vs Residence. My other
program didn't allow a date with a the residence fact, so I didn't use it.
I'm happy with my census entries, and many of my people lived on farms where
there was no street or road recorded on the census, so I haven't
No obvious (to me anyway) source to pick for something I know is true
because I lived it. Or something my mother recalled. Should I simply
add my name as a source? One good example is residence. I know where
we lived for most of my life - and certainly know where my wife and I
have lived since
Maybe it's just been a long week and I need about 20 hours sleep, but I
don't think the address is a Master Source or any kind of source for
that matter. The residence is the Event. The source is you, or your
parents or whoever else you can attribute the address information to.
