It would probably be a cool thing if users could select a photo to include in
the splash screen. And that would only be a simple bit of code.

to my problem.
In my tree I have 5 instances (so far) where a pair of siblings are my direct
ancestors.

In Legacy I have used the Launch tab and browsed to Adobe Reader's exe and set
the path. No luck. I reset everything to Defaults, still no luck. When I click
Launch, Adobe Reader opens as it should.

the indicators did you remember to save the
options? After you set that then you also have to go into ToolsSet Direct
Line to Preferred then check to see if they are bold.
