Susan,
I don’t know what might be considered the correct way but my personal
preference is to use (_) for an unknown name. I enter everything based
on the way it reads in the narrative descendant report and I like to have the
reader see immediately where a name is unknown. Sometimes

Thank you to all the marvellous people who have offered assistance in entering
unknown names. I think that at this stage I will try David’s method.

Thanks David,
And I agree with you
REMEMBER that there is NO right or wrong way, just what one prefers to do and
WORKs for them.
What would be the correct way to enter a person, whose surname you don't
know?
I have many where I have the father's full name and his wife's first name
only.
Many thanks

Researching; Pegrum, Aitchison, Rafferty, Armstrong, Crawford, Haggis,
Elliott, Foley, Whitelaw, Lewry,
When I have that problem I just enter the last name as unknown.
I go back and change it if I'm ever able to find the proper surname.

Best to leave all unknown fields blank. For dates, a good guess based on
birth years of parents or children or spouse or marriage date will help
when doing merges.
Unknown wastes ink when printing and looks terrible to me.

If all I know is the person's first name, that is all I enter. I don't
put 'unknown' or any variant of that in the surname field.
If I later find out more, I create an AKA with appropriate sources, and
then swap it for the current name.
Hope this helps. :-)
Kind Regards,
Wendy
