I have a number of people who were either known by a nickname or a variant
of their given name, and are referred to as such in documentation.
How can I help myself and others looking at my tree data to see this AKA in
the Family View without having to open the Alternate Names window?
For
Kathy,
Legacy recognizes a given name in quotes William Bill as a nickname.
In reports you have special options to use those quoted names. Since it
is entered in the Given Names for the individual they are immediately
apparent in the Family View.

ahh - you you would suggest I put Bill in the given names rather than in
a Custom event type field like Alias or AKA
Makes sense
