Just some details about ODBC and FreeTDS: On Unix plattforms, there's no native ODBC driver for MS SQL Server available. Instead, the FreeTDS client provides connectivity to them and the unixODBC/iODBC projects also use the FreeTDS client as base. For Windows, Microsoft only provides an ODBC driver because this is the native client of their choice.
