So the support for setting it isn't compiled in, so the result when deployed on a recent Ubuntu is that you get weird-ass lcdfilter colour effects around letters.
Proposed fix is to hack in dlsyming FT_Library_SetLcdFilter (when dlsym functions are available) as the fallback, which seems to work.
