It seems that your xdvi is setup to use fairly low resolution fonts,
(406 dpi). Either you could use 'texconfig mode' to change the setup
to ljfour or some other 600dpi mode. If you want the agfafzz mode
for your printer but still want higher resolution in xdvi, change

Hi..
I've tried compiling lilypond getting a lot of problems.
This is a commented log of my try to install lilypond. Maybe it can be
useful to help me install it (already have manuals printed... but
without the software it is hard to write music :-).
My linux box is an old Slackware 8.0 updated
Lily 1.8.1: Compiling the examples from the manual at maj7 chords I get no
triangles but 'M' characters (in typewriter font).
I don't understand why, because I made everything default. I think it is
some kind of font substitution problem, but other symbols (Bb, dim, #5) work
well.

Why beams mean melismata?
It is very strange for me that setting
\property Staff.automaticMelismata = ##t
\autoBeamOff
c-[ d e-] will mean a melisma for the lyrics, but I think only c-( d e-)
(i.e. slurs) should mean that.

The need hasn't really arised yet, although I do remember someone
hacking around, substituting double
Sorry to say that I tried moving the tempo command around and had no
luck. It's possible that I missed whichever magic location is
required, though, since my test file is from a template that I don't
fully understand. I will try again with simpler Lilypond source.

What I've found in regard to \tempo is that it either works in the
\score block that is generating the midi or if it is referenced in every
single staff. If you want the tempo to change in the middle of the
piece you have to use the latter approach. I do this by having each
staff include one or
