Yes, this fixes the problem! By adding \layout {} inside my \score next to
\midi I now get both outputs. Thank you.

I started to play around with midi output and was a little suprised to find
that I needed to add a \midi code block to my file (instead of some other
I'd like to output a small snippet of score as a png image (discussing the
range of a cello, \score{\notes{a'''}}} ). Is there a nice way to do this?
I can go from dvi to ps to png, but surely there's an easier way to generate
graphics (given how many are on the website!)
