Wish I could help you, but I have a macintosh, and on OSX 10.4, lilypond-book only works if you call it directly. (Well, I haven't tried using vim or jEdit, but I figure if the LilyPond.app (or emacs) can't call lilypond-book properly, then nothing can. I'd suggest ditching calling
