automatically place bars in a melody

Hello all, I haven't used Lilypond so much so this might come up as obvious.I need Lilypond to place bars in a melody, splicing durations so that: A) it will fill the bar to it's full capacity and B) it will split durations that exceed the size of the bar, so that they retain the part that
