I saw this on the Samba general list server:
So it sounds like Samba will work with Windows 2003 if an extra step is

I can't see any 64-bit for zSeries there Jim.
The Java SDK v1.4.1 from IBM has been released on all platforms and
some are now available for download from developerworks. New Linux
platforms supported with this release are 64 bit versions for
iSeries, pSeries and zSeries.

There are some products, like Oracle 9i, that require X to run the install

country network using an X server on Windows, the response was positively
geologic. Installing VNC on the Linux guest and connecting with the VNC

Let's see... SCO is suing IBM over an IP infringement. Something they
appear to be eager to have brought to trial. Then they try to force a
settlement with IBM because they don't want it to go to trial (hmm, I think
our case is actually smoke being blown up IBM's Backside) but IBM does not
The problem is that the 3270 is treated as a completely dumb terminal, so there is no
facility for changing colors. Has nothing to do with the distribution or the command
used.

No screen saver. Just the normal background screen (red with the cherry

Just by moving the mouse around, CPU utilization went from 20% to 30%.

I try to update my Suse images via the online update feature of YaST.

I would expect any web or ftp based code download feature to be overloaded for

I suggest patience,
As the larger Linux vendors grow they may look into Akamai for ditributing
downloads similar to what Microsoft does. But you are correct in that when
something popular hits they tend to go dark.

I would certainly be interested to hear of any solution for Linux that
would let it participate in the silo environment. I think what you'll find
is that you'll have to use an archival system, such as Tivoli or the
equivalent, to backup the data and the achival system then interface with
the silo.

I've noticed an acceleration of information about Linux on zSeries being

I'll let UTS chime in with details, but they have an S390 Linux tape
solution, including interfaces to STK silos.

Actually I don't know what the users want G. Prior to this thread, I
didn't realize there were so many flavors to this requirement.
Not that going to their PC and seeing what they want to run, will do me

Storagetek has a VM version of it's silo manager that can be fairly easily
called from Linux with a minimum of hacking. I've also used RMS via rexec to

Hi, Eric.
I suspect that NED requires that your Linux console (ether a real 3270 or an
emulated one like TN3270) must be in 3270 console mode. Normally, Linux
consoles are set up to function as line mode 3215 terminals, allowing Linux
to write text strings directly to the 3270.
Try doing a #CP
I (accidently) trashed the minidisk with the / and /boot filesystems, so i
went ahead with a reinstall of SLES8 31bit. We are running an oracle
database on this guest. Coming back up I have some very weird things going
on. the logical volumes in vg01 are formatted with jfs and are about 10 gig
I would like to be able to do some volume snapshots for a disaster recovery
exercise.
Since we don't have VM, what I'd like to do is go down to single user mode,
software applications stopped and issue a device copy for all active
devices, and then come back up with the devices I just copied to,
I recommend you define a half dozen virtual GRAFs (as root)
hcp DEF GRAF 620
hcp DEF GRAF 621
hcp DEF GRAF 622
hcp DEF GRAF 623
on your Linux guest. (Above commands issued from the shell.)
Then when usint TN3270 (or X3270, or whatever 3270 emulator you like)
Oh ... and you will want to run a 'getty' on the 62x tubes.
Sign on to Linux that way, and there will be a /dev/ttyxx
as well as a /dev/tubxx for your session.
ned is supported only on 3270 terminals
The problem you encountered is that Linux doesn't see a 3270
for the connection you are using.
