Out of curiousity, why would you do this? The resource requirement
for monitoring performance (what *monitor is intended for) should
be less than 1% of the resources available. I think that if you
use a linux server for processing this data to provide performance
data, that at some point, you will

Another flash!
I was able to get my 3490 drives online to the test LPAR O/S. I didn't actually run
anything to allocate/use a drive but the CHPID, PATH, and devices all came online.
My 3490's are parallel channel attached and the CHPID is defined as reconfigurable. I
varied the devices and path offline and
I suspect that it's simply cranial flatulence that is making this
difficult.
I am trying to install nano, version 1.2.3-1 as a replacement for pico
which is no longer shipped with SLES8.
I try a 'rpm --install nano-1.2.3-1.src.rpm' and absolutely nothing
happens.
At a loss.

that's great! did you have a chance to try an ipl off a standalone dump
tape?

The files end up in subdirectories under /usr/src/packages. The Source tarball will
be in SOURCES there, and the spec file in SPECS.
You can do rpm -bp on the spec file to uppack and patch the source tree into the BUILD
directory.

I try a 'rpm --install nano-1.2.3-1.src.rpm' and absolutely nothing
happens.
rpm -qlp nano-1.2.3-1.src.rpm shows the files that will be unpacked by
the rpm. You either want to rpm -bb the_spec_file or simply rpm
--rebuild nano-1.2.3-1.src.rpm.
Good luck,

thanks for the info richard! we used to do this quite a bit with our 3480s
and printers. you can also reassign the chpid on the mvs consoles, rather
that going through the hmc:
CF CHP(xx) OFF
CF CHP(xx) ON
as long as the paths have been previously varied offline, you shouldn't
have a problem.
Robin,
If the .tdf method isn't working for you, take a look at
http://home.iae.nl/users/rvdheij/linuxipl.html for another way to not have
to use tape. The example uses names from SUSE, but it should work with any
other distribution.

As you suggested I did config the chpid offline from the production lpar first. But
when I attempted to config the chpid online to the test lpar I got this,
IEE076I CHP(0C) NOT BROUGHT ONLINE, HARDWARE FAILURE
IEE148I CHP(C) NOT RECONFIGURED - ITEM NOT AVAILABLE
So I went to the computer room
hi mark, i still have this on my todo list. i've since found i can't even
ipl a stand alone dump tape on our 3490s, something that i'd really like
to solve. so for now i've put the .tdf method on the back burner. i'll let
you know how it goes. thanks for your help!

I am in the process of making our first production Linux Guest for WAS 5.1.
Went through all the steps to install and go to network deployment mode and
we noticed that under the new guest WAS starts up saying the JIT is
disabled, but on our test guest, the JIT is enabled.
I do not recall an

Stumbled across this last night while looking for SCSI commands for
autochangers. Looks like a even more sophisticated tool than Amanda, and
has some very nice capabilities wrt to separation of tape management
from backup job management. Worth a look.

Hello List,
I've been grappling with SLES-9 and have already installed it a bunch of
times. I thought it would be helpful to share some of my findings. For
the most part, I feel the SLES-9 install is an improvement over SLES-8:
Pros:
(1) Parallel dasdfmt and fdasd of disks - no separate ssh
New Qt packages are available for Slack/390 9.0, 9.1, and -current to fix
security issues. Bugs in the routines that handle PNG, BMP, GIF, and JPEG
images may allow an attacker to cause unauthorized code to execute when a
specially crafted image file is processed. These flaws may also cause
James,
Did you install this on a 'bare' system or use it to upgrade a SLES-8
system in place?
On a 'bare' system (New installation), under z/VM of course.

I built a new Linux guest and I'm trying to get the thing to talk to a

I'm having one of those I *know* that I've seen this somewhere, and
recently moments.
Simple question: What's the method to raise the upper bound on UID
numbers in SuSE? I have a SLES9 system that I need to tweak in order to
accommodate UIDs greater than 60,000. I've just seen this somewhere in
Once again, the tried-and-true method of give up, post to the list,
find the answer prevails.
Solution: YaST2 - Security and Users - Local Security Configuration /
Custom Settings [click next a few more times] eventually leads to a
dialog that allows you to vary the range for maximum UID and GID
Try hsi1 - since hipersockets and osa-express use the same driver, it
appears as another instance of the same type of device.
It could also be that youre starting the address sequence on an odd
number, try devices 0ED4-ED6

Ok, here's the answer to your xdm problem. When I build Slack/390, I was on
a system that used a virtual QDIO device. QDIO/QETH requires IPV6 support.
IPV6 was enabled as a kernel module, not in the kernel. If you do a
modprobe ipv6 to load IPV6, you should be able to start xdm. If you want

Thanks I'll give that a try!

The first suggestion (use hsi1) would be supported by this line:

You can't have an eth0 and an hsi0. Use hsi1 instead.

Is the version of Java the same between the two? Earlier versions of the

It might be worth your while to figure out what system configuration file
actually got modified by that dialog. Sometimes having multiple avenues to
