Hello list,
Has anyone gotten the Patch CD Update function to work? We have some
vanilla SLES9 images and some at SLES9+SP2. We have a beta (RC2) copy of
SP3 which consists of 3 .iso CDs. We want to upgrade some of the images to
try out SP3.
(1) I mount the CDs loopback and make them available
Mike, I had the same problem applying SP2 to SLES9. It never picked up the
2nd CD.
I had to merge the cd's into one cd and point YaST update to the new merged
file.
After that the Patch Update process worked for SLES9 SP2.
There are a couple of very good performance monitors available for z/VM
that will be able to tell you what is happening at the Linux level. If
you are going to deploy Linux for zSeries in a big way, it is suggested
to acquire a performance monitor so that you can detect these problems
easily.
NFS will not descend through mountpoints of other filesystems. If you create a
directory, say /media/patchCDs, and create directories CD1 and CD2 within the
first directory and mount your ISOs there, and then share /media/patchCDs via
NFS, you won't be able to see the contents of CD1 or CD2 on

Oh, yes, I now recall this thread not too long ago. Thanks Terry
But the function says Patch CD Update, not Patch merged CDs Update. As

Anyone using Performance Toolkit for VM to monitor Linux guests?
Thanks for the responses!

I have always recommended that people _not_ use LVM for their root file
system. Use it for /tmp, /var, /usr, /home, /opt, but never /. Your
experience is another example of why.

If you're going to make changes/improvements to mksles9root, then I'd
like to see a version that doesn't actually copy all the files to disk,
but just uses symbolic links pointing to the loopback mounted .iso
images. Someone published a similar method for RHEL4:
Neale and I have just released a white paper on using the Barnard
Software NJE/IP Bridge in a couple of sample scenarios. The paper is
available for download from http://www.sinenomine.net.
Enjoy.

Will SLES8 handle VSWITCH? I've got it working on SLES9-SP2 and I'm
going to start converting a lot of servers. How about SLES8? Will it
work? What kernel level or SP level do you have to be at if so?
Always do right. This will gratify some people and confound the rest.

Most of our SLES8 kernel levels are 2.4.21-231 (I don't know what
service pack that is) and they work just fine with the Vswitch.
