A very fast and smart way to do that is to use a cluster filesystem.
The current state-of-the art filesystem for that is Oracle cluster
filesystem (despite the name it works for all data/applications). I
would trust it
Hello,
I took a look at the RedHat website:
Red Hat GFS is...
* The only native 64-bit cluster file system on Linux for enterprise
workloads - support for x86, AMD64/EM64T, and Itanium
* The most scalable enterprise cluster file system on Linux - supported
up to 256 nodes
* Tightly

Hi,
my observations are that you absolutely need to disconnect from a running
linux machine.
If you logoff, your machine is killed.
If you close the TN3270 or it crashes, you have to reconnect quickly to your
running session, then you can disconnect. You might need to enter begin
when
Make sure you have CP SET RUN ON in the PROFILE EXEC for the machine.
Sounds to me like it's going into CP READ when it disconnects.

Not to make light of your point, but doing anything from the VM console of
a Linux guest is next to impossible anyway. Why would you do this instead
of using a telnet/ssh client?

The length of time after which CP will force a disconnected user that
has an outstanding read is configurable in the SYSTEM CONFIG file (in
the Features section, it is the Disconnect_Timeout setting, which can be
set to OFF to disable the function entirely). The default value is
fifteen minutes,
Thanks a lot!

I can't speak for Oracle but in a test between a 4 way Intel, 2ghz, 8Gb
memory running DB2 8..1 they were doing 25K DB Loads per second.
on zSeries, 2 IFL (shared), 1.1Gb memory running DB2 8.1, zSeries did 49K
DB Loads per second.
Same results on queries.
They frontend their app with 6 FTP
Since you say you have set run on I admit to being puzzled. I would
have expected that to work for you. Perhaps someone from the VM
development team can say whether dropped connections are handled
differently from CP disconnects or not.

We ran into that here. SET RUN ON is specified in the profile exec for all of
the Linux guests, but if the 3270 session for that guest (we would use
3270 to manually IPL - otherwise xautolog is the choice) is terminated
(computer crashes, or someone closes the 3270 program) without a #CP DISC
I wonder what we're doing differently. I just tried this with my test server
several times, and it disconnected properly each time, leaving the guest
running.
When I logged back ON though, the session went to CP READ and the server was
partly locked up until I satisfied the read.
If the guest entered CP READ when you reconnected, you are _not_ setting
RUN ON as you should. If for any reason your guest gets put into CP
READ, after (the default) 15 minutes, CP will force it off. Try killing
your 3270 emulator after reconnecting, seeing CP READ, and waiting 15
minutes. I
I went back and rechecked, and while the console showed CP read, the guest
actually did continue to run. I made a minor, but stupid, mistake when I first
tested it.
CP SET RUN ON seems to be behaving exactly as the manual says it should.
Still doesn't explain why the other guy is having
I suppose this is a normal behavior of z/VM to suspend dispatching the
guest due to the console I/O error. Do you think this is compatible
with
running Linux under z/VM? Does anyone has this kind of concern when
using
the console with Linux under z/VM ? CP Q SET shows RUN set to ON but

Thanks Mark.
Within IBM, we have the luxury of an internal download server. I got
SLES10 RC3 (4 CD isos) but have not been able to get it to install.
As a head's up, there are new parmfile parameters
Having downloaded the SLES10-S390, I have some observations and a (huge)
problem:
First, the entire initial dialog has changed... It still asks the same types of
questions, but in new and different orders. This seems, to me, to be change for
change's sake. The procedure was not improved, and
No, it does look like an error, based on what you said about the need to
merge all the CDs into one directory structure. Mike said that he
just mounted them on /CD1, /CD2, etc.

Is anyone out there in zSeries land running Websphere Information
Integrator (WII) on zSeries Linux?
Does anyone know if it's even available? The website
(http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/integration/db2ii/requirements.html)
indicates Linux support, but there's no mention of zSeries
Oh, one thing I forgot to note: For the mainframe, there is only the
s390x (64-bit) architecture. Anyone running on a non-zSeries system
won't be able to run SLES10. From what I gather, the same will be true
of RHEL5 when it appears later this year. Bah.

I have been successful at installing the so-called default
configuration. However, I have been unable to get any ISO image
downloaded to pass an MD5SUM check. I'm going to guess that the posted
MD5SUMs are incorrect but at this point I'm not sure.
As for the changes in the installation
So far all the checksums have been right for me:
d2040920aba5eff904d76577e1a8c550 SLES-10-CD-s390x-RC3-CD1.iso
390f8e28b6642be5951a77cfd644e0a9 SLES-10-CD-s390x-RC3-CD2.iso
87f65c7a9f51545ed62b723db8018401 SLES-10-CD-s390x-RC3-CD3.iso
45554831a60153cb0a66c121313a0c16
I have downloaded the ISO files and the MD5SUM all passed for me. Not
sure that I am willing to install this even as a pre-release trial given
all the problems that have been listed.

This is why I prefer installation over HTTP when I'm first trying
things. I can tell _exactly_ what the installer is trying to access,
and where and how. The search patterns can be very informative about
the possible directory layouts the installer is able to handle.

(snip about VM behavior when the console goes away)
This behavior is not unique to VM at all -- it's exactly equivalent to
hitting L1-A on a Sparc console and leaving it sitting at the ok PROM
