There is an evaluation version for Red Hat Enterprise Linux on System z. There
are two types, supported evaluation (recommended, where you can call support if
you have issues while you're testing), or unsupported (just a download link, no
support). In both cases, it's the same

I'm trying to find a better way to access an MVS EBCDIC fixed block
sequential dataset via NFS from SLES10 SP4 z/Linux.
The problem is two-fold:
1) The file needs to be converted to ASCII. I can use iconv to solve
the EBCDIC to ASCII translation, but I was hoping that someone might
know how to
We've been using TSM to back up our zLinux guests, but management is planning
to drop TSM. I'm interested what alternatives we might have. If you don't use
TSM, how do you back up?

I regularly mounted files between MVS and z/Linux and the translation
(ASCII/EBCDIC) takes place automagically. I believe that the NFS server also
takes care of the NL/CFLF issues - but its been a while since I looked into the
setup. I think the key will be to use the MVS system as the NFS
Further response.
In the NFS Server configuration attributes file you set the binary/text options
and the CRLF options. You will need to review your current configuration to see
you these are set, but you should be able to get exactly what you were looking
for.
