I'm curious. What makes a virtual hipersocket under z/VM and a
LPAR-based hipersocket different? Shouldn't the virtualization in
z/VM erase that difference, or is this one of those need to know
things that the driver uses to turn on some HW assist?

zSeries, not z/OS. In any case, IBM is distro
agnostic. While our commercial distro partners on zSeries are Red Hat,
SuSE and Turbolinux (in alphabetical order), we also work with many
other distros. We don't have a preferred distro for internal use.

zSeries generally available May 31st
SAP's first major application for Linux/390. It's been under test for
a while. I'm a little surprised that they're only going to run it on
64-bit Linux/390.

yesterday. The 1st. image hangs sudennly. After few minutes (sometimes
1/2 hour) the Linux image continues to run. BUT the 2nd image hangs

I heard some rumor about Don't use LVM with Shark/ESS because it use
RAID5.
