Re: ClefOS will not come up

I’m not sure if ClefOS includes the s390-tools package, but if so, the chzdev
command may be an alternative way to handle adding devices to the current or
persistent configuration. More information is available at the following URLs:

Again, much thanks to Neale for helping me through this.
Apparently, I missed the last of 12 steps needed to add DASD to a zLinux
system, which was modifying the /etc/dasd.conf.

Thank you!

Re: [PossibleSpam] Re: Suse failed boot after move to new DS8000

2022-02-25 Thread Fred Bader

This maybe a dumb question, but is the volume VMFF85 online and attached to
the system? If not, when LNXADMIN logs on, it should get an error message
that the volume is not available and therefore MDISK 0100 won't exist and
can't be IPLed.

It would help if we could see the console messages produced when LNXADMIN
was logged on or XAUTOLOGed. I see OPERATOR is defined as SECUSER, so
those messages should be on the OPERATOR's console as well.

I apologize-- I misread your note thinking you were trying to run RHEL 6.1.
RHEL 6.10 should be supported on z13s. I'm afraid I don't have an answer
to your issue & hope someone else does.

Sorry, Fred

I suspect the problem is RHEL 6.1 is too old to run on a z13s. According
to the following sources, RHEL 6.6 or later is required to run on a z13s.

https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/linux-ibm-z-tested-platforms
https://access.redhat.com/ecosystem/hardware/2180941

I appears all versions of RHEL 8.x and SLES 11 SP3 or higher are supported
on z13s and that's probably why you were able to IPL them. Try RHEL 6,6 or
later and see if that will IPL.

I'm attempting to install RHEL 6.10 under KVM on a z13s and haven't been
able to get the installer to IPL. When I try to IPL off of the ISO it fails
with:

LOADPARM=[]
Using virtio-scsi.
SCSI CD-ROM detected.

! Cannot IPL this ISO image !

When I try to do a direct kernel IPL it fails with:

panic s390: core='0' psw-mask='0x000200018000'
psw-addr='0x0002876e' reason='disabled-wait'

I've been able to IPL the RHEL 8 ISO and I've been able to do a direct
kernel IPL of the SLES 11 SP4 installer. Any suggestions on why RHEL 6.10
won't IPL?

Thanks...

Re: configuring a new disk comes up ro ?

2020-01-29 Thread Fred Bader

I agree the MDISK is R/W to the Linux guest, so it is something happening
in Linux when the device is brought online. Can you check your UDEV rules
and see if there is one that would be associated with this device that
includes-- ATTR{readonly}="1" ?

Re: OpenShift 4.2 for Linux on Z now available as a tech preview.

2019-12-06 Thread Fred Bader

I'm not aware that OpenShift 4.2 for Linux on Z requires a z15. I didn't
notice that in the installation material on the Red Hat web site. I'm
pretty certain that the preview version has been installed here at the WSC
and that environment is running on a z14. I'm curious where you heard/read
that it would only run on a z15?

Re: Multithreading on z/Linux

2019-03-11 Thread Fred Bader

A couple of things come to mind. First, is the z/VM that the Linux guest
is running under, part of an SSI cluster? If so, is one of the members of
the SSI cluster still running on an zEC12 and is the Linux guest part of a
relocation domain that includes the zEC12? If a Linux guest is part of a
relocation domain that has different processors in the cluster (e.g.,
zEC12, z13, z14), then Q CPUS and cat/proc/cpuinfo will show the "least
capable" processor (i.e., zEC12). This is because if the Linux guest was
brought up on the z14 and starting using features that didn't exist on
older processors, and then if was relocated to the zEC12, it would get
errors when it tried to use those features. To prevent that from
happening, the Linux guest will be told it is running on the "least
capable" processor that is part of the relocation domain the guest is in.

Second, MT=2 is only applicable to the IFLs available to the z/VM host
(i.e., the Linux guest only sees the number virtual CPUs defined via its
directory entry). If you want your Linux guest to be able to run more
concurrent threads, then after you've enabled SMT2 in the z/VM host, you
can assign more virtual CPUs to your Linux guest.

Re: Moving z/vm and zlinux volumes from old dasd to new dasd

2018-08-16 Thread Fred Bader

I have moved/cloned z/VM 6.4 systems and the only thing related to the new
DASD addresses that I've had to do is run SALIPL against the new IPL volume
and specify the real address of the device with the parm disk as part of
the IPLPARMS text. For example, if F000 is the real address of the new
z/VM 6.4 IPL volume (640RES), and F004 is the real address of the new
volume with the parm disk containing the system configuration file (SYSTEM
CONFIG), then after attaching F000 to my userid, I issue SALIPL as follows:

SALIPL F000 (volid 640RES extent 1 minivol MNTCF1 iplparms fn=SYSTEM
ft=CONFIG pdnum=1 pdvol=F004

To determine the IPL parameters of the existing system, use the Q IPLPARMS
command.

I have been tasked with moving our z/VM and zlinux file system volume from
an old DASD system to a New DASD system.
All of my device numbers / unit addresses will change.

I have been successful in moving all of the z/linux volumes.

My problem is how to move the 6 VM volumes since the IPL text has unit
addresses in it.

In z/vm 5.x I just zapped the 2 addresses in ipl text.

In z/VM 6.4 the ipl text has all of 6 volume address in text and some in
hex.

Can I use SALIPL to change these addresses?

SALIPL was run under the covers when I installed VM6.4; Is there a way to
find out what was passed as parms to SALIPL.

Sounds like we both got into the business around the same time. My

Hi,

We have been successfully able to clone Suse gold images to guests but off
late we ran out of IPs from a particular subnet.

So Network team assigned new set of subnet, have assigned the new IP to a
new zlinux Suse 12 guest and also new default gateway using eth0 down and
up commands but still we cannot SSH to it.

Previously we just had to update the IP assigned and default gateway using
the eth0 down and up commands we were able to ssh to it.

Please advise
