Hello lists,

I have again started a new job, moving on from Innovation Data Processing to
ADP.

At Innovation, helping to roll out the FDRPASVM product that allows you to
migrate running Linux and z/VM systems to new DASD regardless of manufacturer
was a challenging and satisfying project. However, most of that work was
winding down.

As ADP has a continually growing z/VM and Linux environment, they should keep
me busy for many years to come. I look forward to this new role.

Hello all, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all who celebrate it.

I have a question that I was asked and I'm not sure how to answer it. If any of
you would take the time to answer it either online or offline it would be much
appreciated.

The question is: Why zLinux on IBM hardware and not just Linux on (much
cheaper) x86 type hardware?

Advantages?

Disadvantages?

Any articles on the subject?

9/6 NYC IBM and Droplets Seminar Customer Invitation

2002-08-27 Thread Leonard Santalucia

IBM and Droplets Invite You to Come See the Next Generation of Web Services
and Internet Applications

Where: Room 952 @ IBM Briefing Center, 590 Madison Ave, New York, NY

When: Friday, September 6, 2002.
Morning Session 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
or
Afternoon Session 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Why: The web's ubiquity with the functionality and performance of a
desktop GUI. Next generation web services and the internet applications
offer rich interactive GUI's that extend legacy applications without adding
complexity.

These new GUI enabled applications work seamlessly with legacy code bases
and modern architectures, plus offer significant operational and
development cost advantages over current WEB and WIRELESS architectures.

What: The Internet introduced us to the world of thin clients, wireless,
distributed Web Applications and Web Services. The browser gave us a
standard mechanism to reach applications outside the firewall without
installing new software, or so we thought. In the process, users lost rich
functionality, information density, and an easy to use real time interface.
At the same time, developers were burdened with a number of new
technologies to duplicate the former desktop software. The web
architectures, consisting of HTML, servlets, client side scripting,
countless applets and plug-ins, shows no sign of effectively returning the
functionality of desktop software. According to usability research firm
Nielsen Norman Group, Billions of dollars are wasted yearly in lost
productivity as people wait for Web pages to perform duties that could be
better handled by a 1984 Macintosh-style GUI application. Next time you
find yourself traveling, think about the amount of time you personally
waste on simply due to web-page refresh...now multiply that times the
number of employees in your company and the number of working days per
year. The need for easy-to-create Web Services and Internet applications
with the interactivity of desktop applications is now being met by
Droplets, Inc. The Droplets software development platform, with its
Droplets User Interface ServerTM and Software Development Kit, enables
developers to create software that combines the convenient, instant
deployment benefits of the Web's thin client and wireless architectures
with the high usability and rich GUI of fat clients. Usability of desktop
software, centralized maintenance, order of magnitude performance and
security increase, Droplets delivers the next generation of interactive
applications over the Internet.

Public web sites on Linux for S/390

2002-02-09 Thread Leonard Santalucia

The Linux Community Development System is a Service provided by IBM and
available to the public. The Service provides access to Linux on a S/390
environment for the purpose of providing the Open Source community with a
platform to develop, port and/or test drive their products or applications
on this platform. We anticipate the majority of users to include
entrepreneur developers/vendors that otherwise might not have the
opportunity to test/port their code to the S/390 platform. However, we
invite all interested parties that meet the established terms and
conditions to register and experience Linux for S/390. The web site is
highlighted below.

needed.
