renaming read-only subvolumes works fine, as long as you dont move them
to a new directory.
create a ro snapshot, and mv it to a subdir or a parent directory. it
fails with 'Read-only file system'. no nested-subvolumes involved, just
the base and the single snapshot.

i have the exact same problem, also 3.16-3. i did
restoring from an incremental backup breaks the parent UUIDs, making it
impossible to continue doing incremental backup.
1) assume you do incremental backup from home to BACKUP:
btrfs subvol snapshot -r /home /home/backup1
btrfs send /home/backup1 | btrfs receive /BACKUP
btrfs subvol snapshot
