If you're on default initlevel 5 (graphical boot), choose failsafe
mode. You'll get an
xterm. Type in:
icewm

Just putting icewm in ~/.xinitrc should work.
Also putting exec wm without any #!/bin/sh should

give it as #! /bin/sh
