In all probablilty, your original kernel numbers are correct.
There are no kernel versions of 2.0.40 and 2.0.50. The latest stable
kernel is 2.0.36.

Perhaps you should decompress patchXX.gz in /usr/src/linux and then:
patch -p1 patchXX
