I've seen this behavior before; on my system in addition to the doubled keystrokes, cursor animations were jerky. Are you running on a 64-bit kernel, is your clocksource hpet and is vsyscall64 on? $ uname -m x86_64 $ cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource
