No, I get this too and it does not just apply to responses to my own

Not a silly question, though you might think these are.
What is a telnet port?
What is a port scanner?
Bill
The silly question (obviously) would be to ask if you have a telnet port
open. What does your favourite port scanner tell you?

It can be enabled through /etc/inetd.conf (although this may vary across
distros) If you need more specific instructions, you'll have to let me
know what distro you're using. (Quickly, before I leave work, cause I
still haven't gotten a connection at home yet...)
Thanks Greg
By distro
with something like:
/sbin/service xinetd restart
Then Bob should be your uncle :-)

I have a Pentium 133 with 32MB RAM running Redhat 7.0.
It copes ok with Gnome, but I have not actually used it for much as yet.
I installed Redhat 7.3 on it, but it froze up when I tried to use Gnome.

I have no experience with Mandrake, and no knowledge of supermount - and for
that matter very little knowledge of Linux at all - but since no one else
has come up with any suggestions could I hesitantly suggest that perhaps
part of the problem might be that there is no leading / in
mouse to work I am going to have another go at trying to get the PS/2
mouse to work because it too behaved ok during installation. (I borrowed the
serial mouse from the second computer and I don't really want to buy another
one.)
Thanks for all your help you guys.

Could someone explain exactly what munging is?

Nick Rout suggested that too.
Where can I do that in Linux?
There was no conflict in Windows. Would one appear in Linux?
Any way, searching for the IRQ information I found the file which seems to
be at the centre of the problem.
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0

Are there other GUI related files I should be looking at to see if they
change when I configure the network?

I am aiming to set up a SAMBA network between two computers.
They are a Duron 800 with 128 MB RAM running Windows98 (1st edition)
and a Pentium 133 with 32MB RAM running Redhat 7.0.
As a first step I am trying to establish an ethernet connection between the
two.

Thanks for your suggestions. I implemented them and aquired more knowledge
in the process.
The cause of the problem became apparent when after trying your suggestions
without effect I decided to clean all unnecessary clutter from my Windows
network configurations.

Thanks Richard
I am struggling with setting up the network at the moment. What I've got to
do over the next few days is spend some time reading up on networking, then
hopefully I will be able to come back to you guys with some intelligent
queries if I still cannot get it set up.

Now I have to work out what I want to put in my smb.conf .
That should keep me quiet for a while :)

Starting Samba for Redhat 7.x is normally done from a script
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
BUT
I have Redhat 7.0 on a CD
In RedHat/RPMS it contains
samba-2.0.7-21ssl.i386.rpm
samba-client-2.0.7-21ssl.i386.rpm
samba-common-2.0.7-21ssl.i386.rpm
I have issued the commands
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/samba-client*.rpm
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/samba-common*.rpm
rpm -q samba-client
Thanks Matthew
Sorry to be so dense but I don't understand what you mean by
Neither samba-client*.rpm nor samba-common*.rpm match -- so you haven't
installed the samba daemon.
I have now issued the command
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/samba-2*.rpm
Did that install the samba daemon ?
setup
Thanks Gareth
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/samba*
results in an already installed message for the 3 previously mentioned files
:)
you might try:
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/samba*
?
just a thought..
Gareth
Thanks Steve
Looks like I will have to get myself a CD burner. Hmm this open source
software is getting expensive. What with the books I've bought, and the set
of Debian disks yet to be tackled I could have bought myself WinXP by now
:) But then again where would be the fun in that ...
Bill
Wow - that's what I call a real floor show !!
