Well I followed Sascha's advise and ran a disk scan in xp (nortons)
which didn't find any problems. I'm back in linux right now and it's
behaving itself. I can touch /mnt/win_d empty OK.
I have /mnt/win_d in fstab, and also created a link to the same called
d_drive in /home/roger/documents.

Hi, I seem to have lost write access to my folders (has been fine up to

Try typing mount, to check that the partition is mounted rw, not ro.
Also, try creating a small file to see if that works:
# touch /mnt/win_d/empty
Cheers,
Carl.
OK this is weird! First I had:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] win_d]# mount | grep win_d
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part5 on /mnt/win_d type vfat
(rw,codepage=850,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1)
read/write, that's good.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] win_d]# touch /mnt/win_d empty
[EMAIL PROTECTED] win_d]# ls | grep
Well I shouldn't have spoken so soon, it's broken again! Suddenly back
to the same problem with not being able to write to any of the folders.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] win_d]# touch /mnt/win_d empty2
touch: setting times of `/mnt/win_d': Read-only file system
touch: cannot touch `empty2': Read-only

Looking in Konqueror the permissions for all the folders on the
partition are shown as rwxrwxrwx, which I thought would be OK? (I
