These use Broadcom chipset and hence, third party firmware can be
installed on them.

It is simply a MSD. But the manufacturer do not follow standard usb
descriptor for generic MSD, and when descriptor does not match, the generic
driver is not used by PC.

Don't have any idea about Mobile data card, but you can use GSM modem
connected to serial port. These modems works with AT command set.
The modems are widely available for Rs. 5000-6000.
