I agree with both Bill and Keith. If you are going to teach someone how to
ride a bike, you don't show them a picture of the bike and have them read
the instructions on how to ride it. You don't buy them a bike and have them
look at it. You get them on the bike, tell them what to do and
I would like a copy, please.

I missed it, too. I went back to read the archives, and what a great
discussion! I am going to jump in now, and maybe ignite another talk?
I was so engrossed in this book, I read it in 2 days. I think it takes a
power house like Nancie Atwell to stand up and say that they one way
Rather than making response so formal with notebooks, why not try using post
it notes. Have your students read and then post their thoughts, concerns,
puzzles, angers, etc. When the group comes together for a discussion, the
kids take out their post it notes and generate conversations that way.
