OK, after a week of struggling with this, I noticed that the client
complains about not being able to read the modules directory.

I then realised that we have 3 kernels available in tftpboot, but one
modules for one of them.
I changed the kernel to boot with to match the modules we have and now
the client configures the printer and we can print.

PS:  Seems I just needed to send a mail about it to open my eyes...
