I'm happy to report that the www.johndowland.co.uk site is taking shape
nicely. The intention is to have a home for the complete recordings of
Dowland for free download, plus essays, videos, etc.
Today I have added:

It's a great pic. let's be thankful that there are so many great pics.
But what I like is the Thumb Middle It is so present, so real.
Could it be that this thumb middle position was the common way to play
bass lutes? The Bakfark picture also shows him playing thumb middle on a
large lute.

of the more usual # .

bend backwards somewhat at the last joint.

It's extremely helpful for playing that Eb chord where the 1st finger
covers the 1st frets of the 2nd and 3rd courses. Some folks even play
all three 2nd frets of the big G chord. The latter doesn't quite work
for me, though.
