As far as I know, there were two basic types: Milanese and Neapolitan. Milanese
has a lute-like bridge and usually 6 courses of gut strings. Neapolitan has a
floating bridge and is metal strung.
There's at least one Stradivari mandolin in an American museum which name now
escapes me.

Which episode? In one episode of the first Morse season you can spot Chris
Wilson (I think. not mentioned in the credits) playing lute with a counter
tenor. The scene happens at a renaissance banquet.

Could this have anything to do with the speed of the broad band? I have those
problems - especially with Vimeo on my hope computer: we have quite slow broad
band. At the office with fast broad band, same clips run smoothly.

Dear collected wisdom,
This is slightly OT, but I wonder if anybody would have music (or link)
for Schmelzer's wonderful Chaconne (in A major I believe)?
Best wishes to everybody,
Timo

Here is one solution http://www.lucianofaria.com/
Go to the guitar page and scroll down a little. This may be somewhat late for
earlier continuo, plus it's single strung and has six strings on fingerboard.
Has anybody seen the original or picture of it?
Timo
Would this then be a Chitarra Francese?

Our Finnish theorbo is used with loud instruments and outdoors. It takes one to
pluck and four on a ladder to work on the fingerboard.

When I click this tinyurl, the page opens. On top of the page there is a box
which have the text: 'theorbo grove 1910', and a click button with text:
'search for works' (in finnish though). After clicking the button I get a list
of entries. After clicking the first box I scroll down the page,
I coul read the articles, and I'm in Finland.
