Having done some repair work, I have seen many strange types of abuse to lutes.
The biggest group of abusers are transitioning guitarists. Furthermore, they
have never been the first owner of the instrument or in contact with the

Very enjoyable, Rob.
Do you think (Baroque) guitar tombeaux (if that's the plural) have the
same mesmeric effect as the lute ones?
There is a beautiful one in Campion dedicated to M. de Maltot who apparently

I didn't know this piece, so it's a real treat to hear it like this.
The lute sounds as though it has developed, even in a couple of months.

Hi Mark,
I prefer the sound of gut strings, but I am very dissatisfied with the
current state of bass fundamentals and their tuning with their octave

Does anyone else tune down the chanterelle after playing or tie
pieces on to broken strings and re-use them? If so, how long does
it extend the life of the string?
I do this all the time with lower non treble courses that break above the nut.

Forgive me for waiting so long to respond to your posting. If I understand
correctly, you have taken a traditional Belgian song and arranged it for
Baroque lute. Although I am not familiar with the original, I find your
version very pleasing, quite melodic with an underlying chord
It depends on how salvageable the string is. If it broke in the pegbox
area and is a good treble, I have no shame in getting further use out of it.
I am noticing much longer life lately in gut trebles for my baroque lutes
(11 and 13 course), because I tune them lower than usual.
