Ha-ha-ha LOL That was indeed funny Dan!
But seriously, sending mails to the list, that just accumulate obsolete
text is just as irritating as sending multiple mails or html format,
and IMO just plain laziness. It uses up space, makes it, as Leonard
says, hard to see the message,
Perhaps simply placing a response before the original message would
be simple, and it would preserve the continuity and context of the
thread for anyone who has deleted, or not received, the original
message.
Alternatively, interspersing responses with appropriate portions
On all my computers, the most recent part of the email is visible at
the top. If there're 10 pages of older threads, they don't show unless
I want to see them, and I have to deliberately scroll down. So what is
the fuss?

I agree with David’s disagreement. And, obviously, with Wayne’s remarks about
changing subject lines.

I agree that, when creating a new discussion, it should have a new topic. But,
replying to a discussion that is underway requires keeping the same topic so

While we are ranting about whether to crop or not, how about
paying attention to, and changing, the Subject !!
Ed changed the topic from Bream to long messages, but
didn’t change the subject line. Leonard tried desperately
to change the Subject: line but David quickly brought it

I believe the way to treat a changing subject is with the magic word
"olim", which is Latin for something like "used to be". E.g.:

Context is always important. The only reason to crop is when a link
deliberately placed in the content of a message is disabled and placed
below. Navigating through the oceans of indented carats to find the
live link can be annoying.

What’s wrong with “was,” other than the possibility that it will offend any
ancient Romans on the list?

When I had my Ren lute made, I specified that I wanted a scoop because I tend
to dig in. I wonder what the luthiers will answer to this query.

Depending, a soundboard will be between 1.5 and 3.0 mm (average is
about 2.2mm). If you need more room, it is usually easier to
Am I missing something here? Surely one just reads the messages as far
back as suits the individual: this may be just the previous mail or the
whole thread. Otherwise, surely there's a danger of useful bits getting
lost for someone who picks it up at a later stage...

For those of you interested in Baroque lute duets, I put together a page
on Corigniani, with a transcription of his duet + bass and an original
recording by Edward Martin and Paul Berget, as well as some links to
background information on the manuscript and digital facsimile copies.

One reason, perhaps, that it has not changed is that some of us do not agree
with the idea of removing all context of an email message. I get a lot of
emails that have just the response and I have no clue what they are talking
about. A bot to do this would be horrible since it would remove the
Just observe the rule: reply *above* the previous text, not below.
Frankly I don't understand the fuss.
What is more annoying: replying to the lutelist and not removing the
personal email of the poster, which leads to duplicate mails, obviously.
