[LUTE] Re: My Lady Careys Dompe

2017-02-24 Thread Alain Veylit
   Hi all,

A while ago I decided to dig into the possibility that dumps (doompes
or thumpes...) might have a connection with a certain style of playing
on the harp. This was my starting point and while I admit I did not
really get anywhere specific, the journey itself proved somewhat
enjoyable, with forays into Anglo-Irish 19th century politics and a
discovery of some really weird instruments with exotic sounding name
like the crwth and tiompan. This also started from a transcription of
an absolutely remarkable piece in the Marsh lute book, Arthur's dump, a
piece of considerable virtuosity with a remarkable rhythmic pattern at
its core quite unlike any other piece for lute I think, including
pieces titled "dumps". Nothing is known about the origins of the Marsh
lute book and its acquisition by the archbishop and its current
location in Dublin provides no proof of its origins. A lot of its duet
contents seems to also be found in the Cambridge Dd-3-18 MS, many by
   John Johnson.

Although I would not conclude anything overly precise or worth a $20
bet on it, I now tend to think of the dump as the British equivalent of
the brande or branle, i.e. a dance that could be both gay or sad, in
duple or triple meter, but distinguished by a particular move of the
body - for the branle, that was a sideways motion of the body, for the
dump maybe a "thump" of the foot on the ground following a signature
syncopation in the music. But honestly, we don't know that much about
that genre and the evidence I could find is shaky and quite often
politically motivated. Which made that little research quite enjoyable
to me. Was the dump's fall out of favor at roughly the same time as
Elizabeth's edict against wandering harpists a mere coincidence? Could
   be. Or not.

If you are interested in this topic, feel free to check my page on
   Arthur's dump at
   [1]http://fandango.musickshandmade.com/collections/preview/2 and the
   details of my (non)findings at
   [2]http://fandango.musickshandmade.com/files/collection/zip_file/2/Arth
urTheory.html. I provide plenty of links for those who have time to
spend on a long winter afternoon.

Sadly perhaps, the only real evidence of musical interbreeding between
lute and harp comes from Spain, with Mudarra's Fantasia que Contrahaze
La Harpa en la Manera de Ludovico, also a technically very strongly
   typed piece.

McFeely and found a few unspesified dumps in Marsh but none
specific. Sorry, for probably being mistaken by wrong attributions!

[LUTE] west coast

2017-02-24 Thread Ed Durbrow
Any early music people in Nevada County, CA? I just arrived in Grass Valley and
will be based here until the end of March. I may be taking a trip up the west
coast within the next month and hope to set up some house concerts of Ren lute
and original songs with guitar if anyone is interested in helping me arrange
something.
Thanks,
