You are of course correct, but, I found it annoying having to do the
tlmgr update manually, and the --self doesn't do anything when not
necessary, so that's what I have hardwired into

tlmgr update --all is also correct. --self is only needed in case the tlmgr
itself gets an update (you get an warning in that case).

consider to advocate TeX Live instead of MiKTeX on official LyX web page
and I have in mind two reasons:
