The attached patch works around an AMS book unicode issue, as discussed here:

Disadvantage of the workaround is the added dependency, textcase.sty, which is
not needed

There are advantages and disadvantages.
I am not going to do this.
While I don't fall under HIPAA rules, doing this in my day job is too
risky for me.
I'll retire end of 2022, then I can start playing with all the stuff I
