Feel free to bring whatever access issues you have, we'll try to be helpful.

Where do I report for example that this page
https://wiki.lyx.org/Devel/ReleaseNotes has not been updated in years and
needs to be merged with https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX24?

There is no one to report to. Simply edit/fix/remove obsoleted stuff.
Or ask here if unsure about some changes.
In this particular case the ReleaseNotes is so off that you can just delete it
(or add correct links to newer versions).

Or that https://wiki.lyx.org/Devel/LyXGit and https://wiki.lyx.org/Devel/Git
are basically the same thing and can be merged?

Again if you known git enough that you know what you are doing feel free to
merge them and delete the obsolete one.

Oh, ok. I'll see.

Also, I found a cool cookbook recipe for PmWiki that allows blocks of code
with highlighting, which is something I really miss here:
https://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/SourceBlock.

Does this need some new module to be installed?

Pavel

It requires geshi (downloadable from https://github.com/GeSHi/geshi-1.0)
and the sourceblock recipe (at
https://www.pmwiki.org/pmwiki/uploads/Cookbook/sourceblock.php). I tried
it on a dummy server with latest pmwiki and it works out of the box.

But then again, we would only need it on Devel pages, and not in all of
them. Now that I think about it it's pretty overkill.

Looking at the news wiki I find the current separation on

New features brought by the new file format
vs
General improvements

to be way too technical for users. They can't choose LyX version without new
file format change so what is the use of this distinction for them?

Important general changes like DocBook are buried down behind important news
like that we support Syriac doucument language (no offense).

What about dropping it altogether and reorder the features little bit?

I'm not sure if it is worth changing, but the URL is misspelled.
"Dependecies" should be "Dependencies". But perhaps it would cause more
damage than help to change it, e.g. if any site links to that URL (we
could make a redirect, but is it worth the trouble?).

Hi Tommaso,

I'm not sure I understand what you did...

Did you actually edit the template page, or did you create a number of
pages...?

I looked at a page history, e.g.:
http://wiki.lyx.org/Category/Development?action=diff

It seems that in 2011 we were fighting some spam bots, which initially
created the page. Then a developer replaced the page content with the
content of the template page. I have no idea why.

IIRC, the wiki is configured to automatically list pages in a category
for categories where there's no category specific page. This behaviour
is controlled by some template page (I don't remember which right now).

The "correct" fix is therefore to delete the spammed category pages.

If you prefer the content of the category pages you created we could
find the template page for non-existing category pages and modify that
accordingly.

What's your preference?
/Christian

PS
How to delete a wiki page:
I google how to "delete" a wiki page. You simply replace it's entire
markup with the single word "delete". That's it. See e.g. this page that
I just "deleted":

It sounds a little complicated, but would be an improvement on the

Done. But I could not delete the other page. I put category deleteme.

IIRC you have to put delete as the whole content of the page.

Actually, it is for both, asking for help with a problem (not necessarily a
bug) on the list and reporting a bug. This is why I propose a separate page

Good point. It wasn't too long ago that MWE would have sounded very
scary to me.

I will change this soon (or anyone else can if they want to). In this
case it probably still makes sense to add something like this is
often referred to as an MWE (a Minimum Working Example) in case
someone mentions this (or I mistakenly use this term). I'll get rid of
MWE everywhere else.

I would like to make a page on the wiki regarding making MWEs for LyX.
I am checking in here because I would like to make sure that none of
my personal opinions makes it into the page. I would also appreciate
 any comments.

My motivation for creating this page and for asking users to provide
MWEs is that I think a lot of time is lost because of the lack of
MWEs. Also, I think that some questions go unanswered because of the
user not sending an MWE. By encouraging users to post MWEs, I think
that time will be better spent, more questions will be answered, and
it's easier (for developers or users) to turn these types of emails
 into useful bug reports.

I do not want users to have to read a lot before understanding what an
MWE is so I try to give brief advice and then after that give a more
complete treatment of MWEs in a LyX context.

 begin proposed wiki text

title: How to create a Minimum Working Example (MWE) for LyX

 #In a nutshell

An MWE is a .lyx file that is as small as possible while still showing
the behavior that you are asking about. It should include as few
dependencies as possible -- remove any unnecessary pictures and
external files. It should be possible for someone to download your
.lyx file and without modification see the same behavior that you are
 seeing.

Below is more information on how and why to create MWEs.

 #Why create an MWE?
 - MWEs make it easier for people to see the problem you are talking
about and thus easier for them to propose solutions.

 - If 5 people download your .lyx file trying to help and spend 5
minutes removing the graphics you included and cleaning the LaTeX
preamble that is not necessary, then that's 25 minutes of wasted time
instead of the 5 minutes that you could spend doing that. By sending
an MWE, you can make it as easy as possible for someone to help you.

 - It takes time and effort. How is this a good thing? If you show that
you are willing to spend time to solve your own problem, this makes it
more likely that someone else will want to spend his/her time to help
 you with your problem.

 #How to create an MWE?
 - Remove as much as possible from your .lyx file while still making
sure it shows the behavior you are reporting.
-- The preamble should not have anything except what's needed to
reproduce the bug (further, it's helpful if you specify that without
something in the preamble the problem in question goes away).
-- Document settings should not have anything special unless it's
needed to reproduce the bug. For example, if you can reproduce the
behavior by using the document class Article (Standard Class)
instead of a less common document class, please do so.

 - If the example requires external files, make sure they're included
in your email or trac ticket.

 - Use relative paths if you need to include external files. Further,
relative paths should work when all files are put/uncompressed to the
same folder. That is, ../../Dropbox/MyLyXstuff/picture.jpg is
relative but bad; ./picture.jpg is good.

 - Test your MWE. Just before you send it, copy the MWE files to a
different folder. See if things compile fine. Make sure that the
output still shows the problem you're seeing.

 #In addition to the MWE
It is useful if you attach more files in addition to the MWE, such as
your pdf output (or your log from your attempt to produce a PDF
output). Sometimes it's not obvious if the output shows the problem or
not (e.g. if it requires a foreign language that the person trying to
help does not know how to read).

 #FAQ
I cannot create an MWE. Whenever I remove something, my problem goes
 away. What should I do?
 - Technically, this is still a MWE, just a large one! If you do not
want to post a personal .lyx file, state in your email if you would be
willing to send this file privately.
 - Even if you cannot create an MWE or you cannot send it, the fact
that you cannot create an MWE is useful information. It not only gives
information about the possible bug that you are seeing but it also
shows that you made an effort.

 end proposed wiki text

 Any thoughts?

 Best,

 Scott

I like it.

In my view, this should become part of the "official" LyX documentation,
linked from the "list netiquette" http://www.lyx.org/MailingLists#toc7
and the Trac FAQ (and, maybe other places).

Apparently, the problem is that the version of pmwiki we have doesn't

Re: Wiki request

Hi Pavel,

I was unclear,. If you don't have access, I suggested that you tell me
the name of the page to which you have added a password, so that I
could then add that name to the list of pages in the file password.txt
on the server :-)

However, instead of maintaining a list of protected wiki pages in a
file on the server, I've moved the list to the following wiki page:
http://wiki.lyx.org/Site/PasswordProtected

So after you protect a page, by going to the URI + 'action=attr', then
just add the name of the page to the wiki page Site.PasswordProtected.

So the current procedure to protect a page is as follows:

* Go the page in question, but append 'action=attr' to be able to set
the edit password
* Go to http://wiki.lyx.org/Site/PasswordProtected and add the
name of the page to the list of protected pages.

In addition, I'd recommend announcing on e.g. the developers' list
that you proteced the page.

Please note that in order to protect the page, and to add the name of
the page to PasswordProtected, you need to know the password. If you
don't, then ask on the users' or developers' list.

Re: Wiki request

2010-02-13 Thread Christian Ridderström
It's done now.

In order to protect a page from editing with a password, you do as follows:

* Go to the page, with '?action=attr' appended to the URL, e.g.

   http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts.SongbookInstall?action=attr

Then you'll see fields where you can set a password,
and in this case we want to set the password for 'edit'.
Set the password to the same password we use for other
  protected pages.

* Finally, if you have shell access to the server, modify the file:

  /home/lyx/www/wiki.lyx.org/passwords.txt

and add the name of the page that you just protected to the list
  of pages that are protected.

If you don't have access, just tell me.

If you don't know what password to set, ask me or on the list.

At the moment we have the drawback we can't change the password in one
place and have that change reflected on every page. This could be
implemented, but then it'd not be possible for someone without shell
access to protect pages.

Greetings to everyone!
/Christian
