Have you considered the use of MathJax?
If your math is web only, that is a compelling alternative.

TeXmacs is a good alternative.
Hiding away preamble stuff has always been sufficiently problematic for me
for me not to take to LyX.
I have not much used TeXmacs but it has a lot of this and more.
For my documents, I stick to LaTeX with a live preview. Just can't beat
that kind of power.

I have used LaTeX extensively for about 18 years, have contributed class
files, know how to work around most problems there. Its unseemly to call
