Is there such a resource as a french synonyms dictionary that can be used from
inside lyx. Docs don't say much about this...

No, LyX's thesausurs (i.e. aiksaurus) is monolingual. I've done some initial
work to replace that by OpenOffice's thesaurus (i.e. myThes). Then you can
use all languages
