This little exercise has uncovered some bad things.  The Examples folder, as well as several other folders under .lyx, was empty.  I don't know whether anything crucial is also missing, which could account for the failure.  When I tried to re-install Lyx,

Hi Murat, I think you are on the right track.  I do want the active link to be in the pdf output of the Lyx file, not in the Lyx file itself.  So I clicked: Insert/Hyperlink in the main Lyx menu.  However, when I go to the Document/Settings/Pdf properties
