pdf graphics don't display in lyx 1.6.2

If I create a figure float and insert a pdf graphic in it using lyx 1.6.2 I consistently get an error message saying it can't convert the file to a loadable format. The graphic prints fine but it doesn't show up in the Lyx editor. In Lyx 1.6.1 the same pdf file loads and displays in Lyx with
