I'm running lyx on the public beta, and it works fine. You'll need to do
the following:
1) install XFree86 (see http://mrcla.com/XonX for details).
2) install the developer tools (signup at http://connect.apple.com, then
login and download the installer).
3) install the fink package manager

Yes.
You might want to use \textrm{...} if you want "the other syntax"
