Variable to be used from Lyx in the LaTeX text

Hi, I have designed me a few form letters, and in one I need to use a date repeatedly in the text. It is a bit of a nuisance to have to look for the date throughout the text. I can put in LaTeX variables and enter the value in the preamble but wonder how I would create another variable (such as

I am completely baffled by the following Lyx--Latex export behavior: 1. Lyx file (v. 2.0.6) is set to UTF-8(XeteX) 2. file -i myfile.lyx confirm the file is encoded as UTF8 3. Export to Latex(LuaTeX) produces myfile.tex 4. file -i myfile.tex tells me it is now encoded as iso-8859-1 5. lualatex

I have been using LyX for quite a while now, mainly on Mac. But these days for many of my documents LyX is just extremely slow. When I scroll, LyX just slowly scrolls line by line. I can wait for long time while it just continues to slowly scroll. And to insert math, it can take several seconds to
