Appears to be an encoding related problem. I had pasted some text into LyX. ChkTeX failed. Running iconv to obtain UTF-8 started displaying the index again. Thanks to some of the mails on this thread which mentioned encoding related problems. Since copy pasting is a routine activity, isn't there
