I saw that LyX 2.1.2 was released. I have tried the bundle setup in a
64-bit O/S but unfortunately, it still crashes just like before (cf my mail

 actually a big piece of $h!t and their developers, being very arrogant,

 are never answered!)

 But I found out that if I run basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe the second time
 with the option Reinstall using recommended settings (which is *only*
 available when the setup is run outside LyX) after deleting C:\Program
 Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9 folder, the installation went through the end!

 Then at this point, if I used LyX-2.0.7-Installer-1.exe instead, it's
 fine.  So, it might be nice to warn 64 bit O/S users to download the
 LyX-2.0.7-Installer-1.exe on the download page and give them a little bit
 help on installing MiKTeX.

No, that's 100% impossible.  Why?  Because as I said (well, I think I have
said) I'm using the SAME 32-bit setup everywhere.  When I say the *same*, I
mean I have one single setup file in my hard drive and I copy from it again
and again to do tests.  And what results did I get?  In 64-bit O/S, the
setup would crash.  But in 32-bit O/S, it would work.  So the setup cannot
be corrupted (or it would have failed in 32-bit O/S) and I have no Internet
connection problem.


Can you therefore please try this:
 1. uninstall LyX _completely_
 2. uninstall MiKTeX _completely_
 3. check the registry that there are no traces of MiKTeX (and maybe LyX)
 and delte the traces
 4. download the 32bit version of MikTeX from here:
 http://download.heise.de/software/db66db9c69d45180fb6dd453a9dcfa
 7d/531b50c9/111255/basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe


I didn't follow these steps of your because I'm pretty convinced they are
not useful in my case.  I have just done two hashings on the
basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe.  If you can, you could check with me:

SHA-1: 8A0797F1 19D796FF 80ADFAB9 9945E76E 6883609F



 and install MiKTeX while you are logged in on Windows with Admin privileges


If you're suggesting it's an admin privilege problem, I'm 100% it's not.
Nothing to do with it.  I could have disable UAC which wouldn't change
anything at all.

Indeed that was the problem. MiKTeX is onlyine again for some days now, so please uninstal LyX 
_Completely_ (also MikTeX) and then reinstall LyX using the latest installer:

Indeed that was the problem. MiKTeX is onlyine again for some days now, so please uninstal LyX 
_Completely_ (also MikTeX) and then reinstall LyX using the latest installer:

some problems as well with some setups.  I once had problem installing
VMware Workstation in an updated version in my Windows XP.  But the problem

at one time it passed!  So your *good* experience is a fluke, you lucky guy

In another instance, ie in another Win7 64bit, I tried to define its
compatibility to Vista and it worked.  That means the setup has not been
modified since prehistory (I mean 2006, more than 8 years ago)??

 64-bit distro is still experimental -- so I went back to the 32-bit
 MiKTeX 2.9 (the Basic distribution of 160 MB or so, and then added the
 packages detailed under LaTeX Configuration in LyX's Help menu).  It too

 As for MiKTeX being a  big piece of $h!t, I haven't had problems with it
 (and it certainly doesn't give me the kind of conflict between package
 managers mentioned in a recent thread on this list that users of TeXLive on
 Ubuntu systems face).

too *unstable*.  I would certainly avoid using it if there's alternative
LaTeX distribution.

I have never used TeX on Windows, but have you tried the TeXLive
disribution (the standard on Linux and Mac, in its MacTeX version)? It
is available for Windows too (just look on Ctan).
Perhaps it'll solve some of your problems.

Error installing inside Windows 7 64-bit

Hi,

I came across error while trying to install LyX 2.0.7 in Windows 7 64-bit
(actually I have tried in many computers with the same error).  I'm using
the setup called LyX-2.0.7-Bundle-1.exe downloaded from LyX official
website.  As to Windows, to be exact, I have tried Windows 7 Professional 
Enterprise SP1 64-bit but I don't think the *editions* and *SP1* parts are
relevant.  I think the problem would still happen in other 64-bit Windows
O/S, eg XP, Vista, etc.

The error I got are shown in the attached image: the upper dialog appeared
first.  But almost immediately, it's grayed out and the lower dialog
appeared and LyX installation simply was aborted and failed.  LyX setup
then tried to roll back but it got stuck on Remove folder: C:\Program
Files (x86)\LyX 2.0\ and I had to press the Cancel button.

I went a bit further and described here below:

I took basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe and run it in another Windows 7 64-bit and
it still crashed! I then downloaded basic-miktex-2.9.5105-x64.exe from
MiKTeX official website and tried it but that crashed as well!  Seems like
MiKTeX setup has very serious problem installing in 64bit O/S!

(Off-topic 1: Maybe it's some known bug like

(Off-topic 2: I have heard from some other friends of mine that MiKTeX is
actually a big piece of $h!t and their developers, being very arrogant,
didn't care about their installer not working in 64-bit O/S and I quite

But I found out that if I run basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe the second time
with the option Reinstall using recommended settings (which is *only*
available when the setup is run outside LyX) after deleting C:\Program
Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9 folder, the installation went through the end!

Then at this point, if I used LyX-2.0.7-Installer-1.exe instead, it's
fine.  So, it might be nice to warn 64 bit O/S users to download the
LyX-2.0.7-Installer-1.exe on the download page and give them a little bit
help on installing MiKTeX.

-- evidently the 64-bit distro is still experimental -- so I went back 
to the 32-bit MiKTeX 2.9 (the Basic distribution of 160 MB or so, and 
then added the packages detailed under LaTeX Configuration in LyX's Help 
menu).  It too installed without problems.


As for MiKTeX being a  big piece of $h!t, I haven't had problems with 
it (and it certainly doesn't give me the kind of conflict between 
package managers mentioned in a recent thread on this list that users of 
TeXLive on Ubuntu systems face).
