I'm embarking on an art project focusing on irrational fears, and I'd like to invite you all to participate. The project works like this: 1. Do you have an irrational fear? Write a description of it. It can be as long and detailed or as brief and concise as you like, from something purely fantastic to something potentially possible. The only definition of "irrational fear" that matters is your own. Describe the fear as you feel it. If you want to include details about how long you've felt this fear, or where you think it might come from, please feel free to do so, but such details are not required. 2. Share it with me. Marie Robertson, 2505 Derby Street, Berkeley, CA 94705 USA Please indicate whether you wish to remain annonymous; although I don't plan to literally "match up" fears with individuals by name, I would like to recognize you as a collaborator and contributor if you agree to be recognized.. 3. Once I have received your fear description, I will create an artwork based on it--possibilities include video, still photography, installation, altered books, artists' books, found object sculpture, etc. The fear descriptions themselves may become part of the piece in some way also, perhaps as performance or sound art. I'd like, at the completion of the project, to introduce any participants who have not elected to remain anonymous to the art piece based on their fear and perhaps interview them about it. I'm interested to know whether art can diffuse fear or tranform it into something else, or perhaps confirm it as valid rather than irrational. I'm also interested in learning the range of things that cause fear in our society, as so many of our decisions as a culture and as a nation are now driven by fear and sensations of powerlessness...the ultimate in irrationality, as it were. I'd also like to find a place to show all the work and have a big party, too, so there's another reason to participate! Any questions, please direct them to me.
