That's exactly what I was talking about. I understand the potential
problems, but that's OK with me (and, presumably others like me). If
one is savvy enough to be using the --prefix flag, one should be
willing to put up with the potential problems doing so entails.

I tried building gcc44 after installing snow leopard in my Macbook
Pro, and after a few minutes it gave me the following error:

I have upgraded to Macports 1.8.0 on a Leopard system (eventually get to
Snow Leopard in the near future).
I removed the installed ports and then did a sudo port install cairo.
I get the following output. So the question is what is the problem?
