OK, I just started keyboard help, and I hear nothing when I press the CTRL key.
However, I have been using a Mac with VoiceOver everyday for over 13 years, and
pressing the CTRL key is, and has always been the designated key for pausing
speech when VoiceOver is running.

The VoiceOver key for pausing speech is the Control key.
This has nothing to do with what you have selected as the VO modifier.
While pressing another key may or may not stop speech, is another issue
entirely.
You can test this by enabling Keyboard Help, by pressing VO + K, and pressing
CTRL, to

I seldom post or visit here. But here’s one where you all might have some
guidance for me. I have an M1 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.4.1. I updated
from 14.3 point something. Ever since 14.4.1, I’ve noticed that the CAPS LOCK
key will not pause speech in any Mac application.
